The Garden Party Row Along-Irresistible Irises

Today is the day that I get to share with you my pattern, Irresistible Irises.  A special thanks goes to Marian Pena of SeamsToBeSew.com for organizing and hosting the Garden Party Row Along.  Also a special thank you to Electric Quilt and  Northcott Fabrics, for providing great giveaways for this event!

I was inspired to create my block by the irises in my husband's garden. He does a great job creating a visual paradise on our property.  This was the photo that inspired my block.

I decided that this would make a great machine applique block. By simplifying the lines I was able to create a pattern that a confident beginner could complete.

A standard sewing machine is all that is need to create this block. I used a zig-zag/satin stitch to finish the edges and create a smooth texture for the petals and the leaves. For the beard of the iris, I used a decorative stitch that looked like grass.  This created a great texture and visual appeal.

The block is for your personal use.  If you would need a license you can request permission by going to my website, www.LindaBrattenCreations.com  and request so through the contact form.

If you like my pattern, be sure to sign up for my free monthly newsletter, Linda B Creative, where I share other great patterns and tutorials for my subscribers.

The free pattern link has expired, but you can purchase it by visiting my store!

Show and Tell Day for the Once Upon a Story Row Along!

I am so excited to share with you my finished Goldilocks and the Three Bears block for the Once Upon a Story Row Along.

In my first post I shared my thread sketching/painting technique.  I hope that you gave it a try!

Then in my next post I shared my hints and tips to add color to your blocks using Crayola Crayons.  This is my finished block using the crayon technique.

In the directions I also suggest that you could use Inktense pencils and blocks to add color.  I am still planning on posting a tutorial on that, so be sure to subscribe to my blog so you don't miss it.

This is my finished block using the Inktense pencils and blocks to add color.  I also used the Northcott Stonehenge Gradations fabrics to create this block.

A final suggestion to creating my block is to use the patterns for applique.  There are many ways to applique, but one of my favorites is to use my embroidery machine.

This is my block appliqued in the hoop with my Babylock Spirit embroidery machine. I also used the Northcott Stonehenge Gradations Fabrics to create the appliques and the block.

I digitized the blocks, and need to do some more tests before they will be available for purchase in my store.

Let me know which of the three is your favorite in the comments below!

Be sure to check out the other pattern designers show and tell posts.

Additional Notes About Giveaways From Our Sponsors
I am not rich and I do not ask sponsors for money, they provide prizes only.
If they shipped the prize to me, you will be asked to pay for shipping.
All giveaways will be shipped that are in my home on each Saturday of the event.
An invoice will be sent to you via Paypal, and shipping will take place via Paypal, so your Paypal email will be needed to send the invoice. You will receive a tracking number except for overseas shipments. Depending on the weight of the prize, first class is always my first choice, but priority mail will be done where needed. Paypal fees are added to that amount to cover that fee.
Please note, every effort is made to protect the prizes. They go into a plastic bin when I receive them, and it is covered by an airtight cover. I have a dog in my home and I have a smoker in my home, so I do everything possible to protect the prizes.
Most companies are very good about getting prizes off to customers quickly also, but some companies are overseas, so please allow all sponsors a 2-week time period before you report to me that you still haven’t received your prize. When the company is overseas, it can take 6 weeks to 90 days for an item to also arrive.

Once Upon a Story, Goldie Locks and the Three Bears

The day has finally arrived when I get to share with you what I have been working on!  First off thanks to Marian Pena of www.SeamstobeSew.com for hosting the Once Upon a Story Row Along. Also a special thanks to Northcott Fabrics.  Their Stonehenge Gradation fabrics gave me a multitude of color values to play with.

This is the first year that I am able to participate, and  when Marian posted the opportunity, I knew what I wanted to design right away.

The original story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears was written by Robert Southey in 1837, and was called, The Story of Three Bears.

It originally was a story of a badly behaving older woman and three bachelor bears. You can read more about the story here:

It evolved several times since it was first published, and claims to be one of  the most popular tales in the English language.

The version I grew up knowing was the story of a little girl with golden locks of hair, thus Goldilocks.

I remember many Little Golden Books in my youth.
So when designing my block I went back to my traditional quilting roots and started playing with the Bear's Paw Block in Electric Quilt 8 software.  Marian had given us different size options, so I chose the 30"x 30" as this could easily become a crib quilt if desired.

However, the art quilter in me took over and said, it needs some mixed media.  So for my block I have included 5 patterns that can be placed in the paws.  These designs can be hand embroidered or thread sketched (another love of mine!). So then the block began to look like this.

And because I like choices, I have included a second pattern for Goldilocks.  I was trying to come up with a Goldilocks that was ethnically diverse so young ones could imagine themselves or family members being part of the story.

If you have never tried to thread sketch with your sewing machine, be sure to check out a brief tutorial I did while sketching the Mamma Bear paw.

While working on this block, memories of my childhood kept coming up.  One of my favorite things to do was to color in a coloring book.  So here is where the fun comes in.

Mamma Bear that has been thread sketched.
Blocks could be embroidered or thread sketched and used as is in the block.

Once you have the outline completed, you can add some color by using Crayola crayons or Derwent Inktense pencils and blocks.  If you are not into mixed media, you can definitely use fusible web and a raw edge applique technique to complete the blocks. Tutorials to follow on how to apply these mediums to the blocks.

A sample with the Crayola Crayons.
I used a black satin stitch to achieve a coloring book look with the raw edge applique.

So how do you get this wonderful pattern?  Simply visit my website and go to the Once Upon a Story, Goldilocks and the Three Bears.  There are two pdfs to download, one is the instructions and one contains the actual patterns.
